This is an online summer course, taught using Zoom
Jacob van Eyck was a prolific Dutch composer in the early Baroque period, contributing a vast number of works to the recorder repertoire with Der Fluyten Lust-hof (The Flute’s Pleasure Garden). The collection consists of 143 unaccompanied pieces, based on the theme and variations form. These works are a fantastic study and insight into improvisation and ornamentation of a simple melody in the early Baroque period.
This course will focus on one of these works and discuss style, articulation, ornamentation, keys and strategies for approaching practice. Part of the final class will be reserved for those interested in performing part of the piece for all participants. While the version we will focus on is written for recorder, flute and oboe players wanting to expand their Baroque knowledge and repertoire are welcome too.
Recommended level: Intermediate and above
